Having a Baby in Bangalore: Some Notes

Updated June 17, 2009 to add a link to this post - Complications during VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) and a terrible tragedy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For those of you considering having babies in Bangalore (especially those that have had babies in other countries and are wondering how your experience compares with that here), here are some quick notes:
1. We had our baby at one of the bigger, multi-speciality hospitals in Bangalore that offers "birthing suites". Unfortunately, the day little N was to be born, all the birthing suites were taken. We were repeatedly told in the days leading up to the due date that birthing suites could not be booked in advance, but on the day I was admitted to the hospital, we were told that one of the suites was booked by one of the head honchos at the hospital, for, get this, a non labor and delivery procedure!
So I got admitted to the general labor and delivery (L&D) ward, which had three beds in a row in a room and two other beds in the room next door. Adjoining the three-bed room was the delivery room with two beds on which the delivery would take place. There was one bathroom for the five beds, which, in my opinion, was inadequate, especially because the hospital, as a rule, administers enemas to all women who come to deliver babies. I leave the rest to your imagination.
The L&D ward also pipes in Indian classical music in the early hours of the morning which can be pretty irritating when you are going through pain and contractions.
There is one on-call doctor (I guess an intern or a resident, I'm not sure, but rather on the young side) manning the L&D ward, monitoring the progress of labor and assisting the OB/Gyns with the delivery with about two or three nurses administering drips, injections, hooking up the fetal and contraction monitors, etc.
2. Whether you like it or not, you will get a thorough shaving in preparation for the delivery. Most hospitals in the US have discontinued this practice.
3. Almost all OB/Gyn practices here are single-doctor practices. In the US, my OB/Gyn practice had five doctors, each of whom I had to consult during my pregnancy and each of whom was familiar with my case file. So on the day N was born, it did not matter to me which doctor was on call because I knew all of them and they all knew me, so we were all comfortable with each other.
With a single-doctor practice, there is always the danger that your doctor may not be available on the day you go into labor and that after nine months of seeing one doctor, you could, in all likelihood, get stuck with a doctor you haven't seen even once during the last nine months.
If little N had come a week later (i.e., the following weekend), I could have found myself in the delivery room with a doctor I had never visited before. My doctor had plans to be out of town that weekend. I had asked her in the initial months of the pregnancy what would happen if I went into labor and she was not around. She had said, quite simply, that she hadn't taken a vacation in 3 years so there was no likelihood of that.
4. There is a paediatrician ready and waiting to check the newborn in the delivery room itself (whereas N's paediatrician only showed up the following day to check on him).
5. Once you have your baby, you are moved to a ward (room) of your choice - private or semi-private, again depending on availability.
6. Private rooms are pretty comfortable. They have an extra bed for someone to sleep in with you during your stay. Babies room in with the moms.
7. The dietician visits you everyday to make sure you are getting what you need in terms of proper nutrition post-partum and to customize your menu to your tastes.
8. You are given full encouragement and support to breastfeed the baby, starting from nutrition to the floor nurses and nurses from the lactation department who will assist you all through the night and day in case you and the baby have problems with breastfeeding. The nursing staff, both in the L&D ward and those assigned to the rooms, was excellent - very helpful, efficient and knowledgeable.
9. Your OB/Gyn and the paediatrician will check in with you twice a day.
10. Hospital stays are for two days for normal deliveries and if everything is ok with the baby (we were home in less than 48 hours after little N was born).
11. One of the less welcome aspects of the stay in the hospital was the constant stream of hospital staff that visit your room - orderlies, janitors to clean your room (three of them, one after the other), admin staff, public relations staff, electricians, dietician, nurses, food service people, the list goes on. The visits start at 6 am and don't end until 10 pm.
12. Generally, fathers-to-be are not allowed in the L&D ward because there are other women in the room as well. Luckily for me, by the time my contractions came on strong, the two beds on either side of me were empty and there was no one else in the delivery room and so the doctor had not problem with V being there with me.
13. All in all, it was a very positive experience. Througout the duration of the pregnancy I was worried about the process, wondering how it would go.
I lucked out with a very good doctor who was willing to listen to all my concerns (I talked to her about not wanting a C-section, for example; I was pretty nervous that I would be pressured into having a C-section), explain to me why something was prescribed and generally make the birth a collaborative process. This was a pleasant surprise. I had heard that doctors stood on a pedestal and told patients what needed to be done, without any explanations.
As should be the case wherever you decide to have a baby, I suggest that you develop an open line of communication with your doctor, educate yourself about the process and your options. In the end, you will have to trust her to make the decisions that are right for you and your baby.
This is all I can think of right now. If I can recall any more usefull stuff, I'll update this list.
1. DR. SITA BHATEJA
3. DR. HEMANANDINI
4. DR. MANJULA SHIVSHANKAR
I have been following this conversation for our pregnancy and found it a very useful source of information.
Just wanted to suggest another gynae for those who like close to HSR Layout / Koramangala.
Dr. Rita Mhaskar +91 934.123.2062
She is gynae at St. John's Hospital and has her own Clinic opposite Fernhill apartments on Outer Ring Road.
Extremely knowledgeable, calm and collected. The biggest advantage we as a working couple see is that she consults in the evening till almost 10pm so you dont need to necesarrily schedule the appointments on the busy weekends or skip office.
We are still in our second trimester so will keep you updated on how it turns up.
Mrs. Anuradha Srinivasan....
I am now a resident in the United Kingdom and I very well understand the high expectations of people who look for good gynaecologists and paedeatricians in India.
I have great pleasure in recommending Dr. Leela Rao from the 'Lakshmi Maternity Home' as the Supreme Gynaecologist in Malleshwaram. Both my children were born there. Having seen all the best facilities and the high-tech hospitals both in the UK and in India, I feel, our Indian gyanaecologists and paedeatricians are doing a remarakably great job, in the circumstances.
Dr. Leela rao, is highly experienced, and caters to people from all economic classes. Her Hospital( Lakshmi Maternity Home, Margosa Road, Malleshwaram)might seem crowded, especially for people looking for a good ambience, but, she is impeccably confident, and one feels that one is in safe hands.
Dr. Mahesh Rao, the paedeatrician there,who is in fact, Dr. Leela Rao's son, is the best in Malleshwaram, a MD and Foreign returned. Both my kids were born there, my son, and my daughter. My daughter, who is getting to be 3 years old now, was born pre term and with a low birth weight. I had been told about this during my pregnancy itself, and moreover, I was ovr 35 years old when she was born. I had a c-section, only after I couldn't have a normal delivery even after paoin was induced. Add to that, I had been running a high BP towards the end of my 8th month of pregnancy, and the baby had coiled the umbilical cord around her. So, it was a 'special delivery'. But, with Dr. Leela Rao by my side, it was just a cake-walk. I recovered very quickly, and so did my daughter, in the care of Dr. Mahesh Rao, who gave us a lot of courage, was down-to-earth and extremely efficient and brilliant all through.Indeed, he was our God-send. He would soon be joined by hes wife, Dr. Mrs. Mahesh Rao ,at his Hospital, as an experienced Gynaecologist. The trio , all from the same family, are a boon to the residents of Malleshwaram, and may God bless them. They are planning another new Specialities Hospital in the same location.
I feel, that smooth talking and ambience is not the one that makes good Doctors, but, Honesty, dedication, professionalism, commitment and frankness, does. All these are the Hallmarks of the best among them and one would be reassured and in safe hands. I once again have utmost pleasure in recommending Dr. Leela Rao, Dr. Mahesh Rao and Dr. Mrs. Mahesh Rao to all those who are looking for talented, efficient and mercurial Doctors in Malleshwaram, Bangalore.
Hi all,
I am Tej and 39WK preg.
I am visiting Dr Vidya V Bhat Radhakrishna hospita, Girinagar.
from day1 she is my consultant doctor and am so happy with her patience , knowledge and responce.
Draw backs are
1)busy schedule due to patients.But spends enough time if REQUIRED.
2) Some times she goes on long leave for a week or so. As Sujatha mentioned in her post... if our delivery comes in that period we face a new doctor.
I have a major problem with hospital is that nurses or attenders or front desk people knows ONLY kannada. Nurses are not at all trained and they dont know how to give a normal injection.
I hate to go for delivery due to staff , but I can not move to other hospital (doctor) and it becomes new case for new doctor.
I wish to sacrifice facilities for keeping that good doctor whom i have confidence.
I have few questions here..
How importsnt role nurses or Aayas play in a delivery?
Do the doctor stay with patient till delivery?
Should I move to a wockheart or appolo or any multi specility hospital instead of getting pain due to staff?
What problems I will face if I change hospital (doctor) now?
Is it mandatory to get delivery in labour room? cann't we use normal rooms?
Although I have ttk , just to know how come hospitals charge 20000 per day?
a 6* hotel also doesn't charge that much..
How much it costs for a luxery independent room in these multi speciality hospitals?
expecting sooner as I dont have much time.
I am very happy with Dr. Leela Bhagwan. I had my first delivery in consultation of Leela Bhagawan, which was a normal delivery after inducing the pain. I went to many doctors as I was new to Bangalore, and was not satisfied with any of them. Then I went to Sagar Apollo to Indira Reddy, who always forget to write the prescription and next time you go to her and she will not know what medicines you should take now and on what medication you are already. So the risk is she forgets to tell you medicines. Then luckily I came to know about Leela Bhagwan. Through out I had a great experience with her. She has lots of patience which is most admiring factor. I have been to Dr. Manjula in Manipal and Dr. Vidya Desai with whom I didn't have a good experience as I found too much attitude problem in them. Also they don't have time to listen to the patients.
Dr. Leela Bhagwaan has moved from Sagar Apollo to Cradle and Manipal hospital in Jaynagar.
@ Nimisha and others asking for doctor/hospital recommendations - please take a few minutes to go through the comments on this post. They offer names of doctors and hospitals and readers' experiences with them. Of course, you should always make an appointment for a consultation to make sure you will be comfortable with the doctor. Thanks.
There seems to be only one recommendation for a doctor in Malleswaram, Rajajinagar and surrounding areas.
Dr Indira Seshan is a very experienced doctor and is very patient in answering queries. Her demanour is calm and reassuring. She attends to deliveries at Lakshmi Maternity Home, Margosa Road, Malleswaram and has a clinic on Sampige Road, Malleswaram.
Hi shalz75 - A good gynaec who worked for me is Dr Latha Venkataram who consults at Rangadorai Memorial and Wockhardt (now Fortis). I had a normal delivery at age 38 - she encourages normal deliveries as far as possible, but ofcourse will also do whatever is needed in your/baby's interest.
I am twice a mother and both times it was at Manipal Hospital in Bangalore. My first one in 2007 was with Dr.Manjula Shivashankar and the second one was 2010 with Dr.Vidya Desai. 2nd time, I changed my doctor as I had my residence very near to the doctor. Overall, I found both doctors good though not great,to be frank. Also, have to mention that there was a coincidence that both times at Manipal Hospital, Dr.Kshama was greatly involved in helping me out. Very grateful to her too.
I CNACELLED ALL MY SCHEDULES TO VISIT HER , AND UPON SEEING HER SHE SAYS ACTUALLY THERES NO NEED OF A SCAN, UR REPORT SAYS UR OVULATING...??/ AND THE NEXT QUESTION WAS Y DONT U GO FOR AN I IUI..LET ME TELL YOU IM IN THE INITIAL STAGE OF MY TREATMENT, HARDLY ANY TESTS HAVE BEEN DONE AND SHE SAYS ITS AN UNEXPLAINED INFERTILITY....MAY SHES GOOD FOR POST PREGNANCY ISSUES BUT NEVER FOR INFERTILITY..THOSE HAVING INFERTILITY ISSUES PLEASE RECONSIDER VISITING HER..
We consulted Dr. Leela Bhagwan at Cradle for our first pregnancy ( which resulted in a miscarriage 3 weeks ago).
We have been so disappointed with the facilities at Cradle that we would never recommend it to anyone or go back there ourselves.
Our experience there taught us that high prices does not mean world class service and amenities.
Equipment, nursing staff, room conditions - all were such a disappointment. As were all the doctors.
- call bell not working
-noisy toilet
-equipment not working
- technician repairing it in the room itself despite being asked to take it outside.
- morning shift of nursing staff were inexperienced trainees who did not want to do anything.
LDR experience:
- one doc jabbed me with a needle in the thigh w/o any warning
- she inserted her hand inside me to "clean" me out. When i resisted, screaming in pain; she told me to put up with it as its important to do so. I found her BARBARIC and UNPROFESSIONAL.
- laughter and joviality despite the fact that I was having a miscarriage.
Unprofessional Adminstrative staff :
We were made to wait for 21/2 hours for the bill; almost walked out of there w/o paying it.
Hospital adminstrator could not be located nor his number shared with us.
We called a few days later to speak to him; he is yet to call back.
