What's with the weather?

It's the 23rd of October and the temperature here is set to reach the 80s (F). That's at least 15 degrees above normal.

The leaves are falling, the grass is dying, kids have been back at school for nearly two months, but fall temperatures seem to have gone on holiday. We wake up in the morning and dress the kids warm and by the time Calvin returns from school he's sweaty and mad. At nighttime, when you would expect to feel cold, we dress up in jackets and pants but end up feeling uncomfortably warm as the night wears on.

There's definitely something odd. It's great not to have to crank up the heat and bear the brunt of the astronomically high gas costs, but it feels weird and unhealthy, as a friend said, to feel so warm so late in the year.

Is this global warming? Every time I think that, the weatherman (or woman) on TV says something like, "The last time we had weather like this at this time of the year was in 19__." How can it be global warming if we've already had these weather patterns many years ago?

Updated to add the most important point I wanted to make - there is no end in sight to the infernal nuisance of shaving! Bah!

Oh boy! Its at least getting a little chillier here and we are happy to don a light jacket, if not get out the winter boots, just as yet.

Just now, I too did a post, skimming on this aspect of fall.

"How can it be global warming if we've already had these weather patterns many years ago?" - did you read Bjorn Lomberg's (The Skeptical Environmentalist) op-ed in the Post a couple of weekends ago?

He has a new book out, not questioning global warming, but questioning the priorities in the 'fight' against it.

I have been meaning to write a post about it.

Btw - "no end in sight to the infernal nuisance of shaving" - I was about to say "what the ...", when I suddenly got it. LOL.

Ok, one more point before I shut up: on the hirsute problem, two suggestions - dark nylons and/or 'I am from France'.

Here we're having an absurdly cool October. It's down to 16 degrees C at night, and early mornings are dark and nippy. Global cooling?

BPSK, dark nylons and sticky weather just don't gel. :)

BEV, it's confusing is what it is.

d, Sunishine, thanks. The pic is of a storefront in Jaipur just outside the Pink City.

Dotmom, thanks for delurking and the links. Look forward to reading them. :)

i, the answer is somewhere in between the two extremes, methinks.

N, sure! As soon as I figure out a way to wrap it. :)

Suj - its not a question of whether the pattern has been seen before or not but an overall fluctuation which means that you won't have to wait that much longer to see another unseasonably warm October. or so I think. :)
As for shaving - you could always pretend to be a Spaniard or take up waxing. I prefer waxing myself - messy and time consuming but at least i dont dread the shower :)

PS - LOVE the new layout.

Am, I have to do something about waxing. Can't bring myself to do it! I'm such a baby, I tell ya!

And thanks!
