Life in Bangalore: Schools III

This is the last in a three-part series. Parts I and II appear here and here.
________________________________

I am fast discovering that this is an inexhaustible topic!

I want to mention a couple of things as I continue writing about schools in Bangalore.

Firstly, I understand that most international schools follow US teaching methods (low student/teacher ratio, time for extra-curricular activities (music lessons, for example), and that the management works with each family with full awareness of a student's educational background. The expat community naturally gravitates towards these schools. I don't have personal experience with those schools, but I do know that most are expensive by Indian standards. For an expat, if school expenses are included in the compensation package, this may not be an issue.

Secondly, I grew up in the school system here and as I've heard time and again, especially from Indians who have gone on to study in the US and from American students and faculty, the Indian school system provides a strong foundation in the basics. Multiplication tables may be learnt by rote, but Indian kids are taught their tables by the time they finish elementary school and that is a key factor in many Indian kids doing well in math. The principal at my son's school says to me that when some of her students go back to the US after finishing kindergarten at her school, they've been able to do second-grade level work straight away.

That's all fine, but it's no use if my son hates going to school in the first place. Before we came here, he used to hate weekends because there was no school on weekends. Now, it's the other way around.

I also write about this with the understanding that, parents being parents, no school system is perfect for their children. There are problems with schools in a lot of other countries as well, even in the US. One only needs to look at the newspapers on a daily basis for an inexhaustible list of problems plaguing our school systems in the US. There was a recent, horrific story in the Washington Post about the goings-on on school buses, including first-graders being bullied into blowing condoms, elementary school girls being prodded and poked by the boys on the bus and so on.

No matter where you live, the only way to deal with problems is to be aware of them in the first place. By recounting my experiences here, whether with schools, housing, or the other aspects of Bangalore life, I do hope to make you aware.

And I do not mean to suggest that these are insurmountable problems. As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, schools do need to understand that you are watching.

Hi Sujatha,

Was reading your Blog...I find it really helpful...have few question reading my son's admission.

We"ll be going back to Bangalore from US in August..My Son is going to Grade 1 here in US...the time when we reach Blore all session must have been started...

We"ll be living near Jayanagar 9 th. phase so for me DPS South will work but have no idea that will they take admission in midsession for year 2009-2010. Do u have any idea of any other school in that area...beacuase i don't want to pay a lot for 1 year beacuse next year will again try for DPS..but on the other hand don't want to compromise with my son's studies.

List of Good schools will be great help.

Thanks Neetu

Hi!
Nice to find this blog.
We are shifting from delhi to b'lore in jun 2010 and will be staying in CV Raman Nagar just off Old Madras Road (though I've not seen the place)
My son completed 3 on 22 Feb 2010.
What about Ankur Montessori as it is just 500 meters away.
Though one Anom on this blog had not a very nice experience with the school, any other views.
Or any other good school, but affordable.
It will really be a great relief.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Sujata

Great Blog ... with great informative content for parents looking for quality education for their kids.

I am pretty new to Bangalore and initially got my son admittd to Prayag Montessori School, Banshankari. However, my office moved to Whitefield and now looking for a Good montessori school for him around Whitefield. I have heard about Ryan, Atlanta and Bright Begin... Could you help me finalize the better one for my son. I visited all three but not able to finalize one..

He is 2.5 years old and will go to M1 next session. I am looking for a Pre-Mont for him.

Looking forward to hear from you...

Keep up the good work...

-Ajay

Ajay, I don't have personal experience with those schools so will not be able to tell you which one is better than the other. I had a friend who sent her son to Bright Beginnings and was happy with them. I would suggest going to those schools in the morning one day and talking to the parents who come to drop their kids off. If you could chat with them I think you could get a sense for how happy they are about the school. Their experiences will be more recent and therefore more relevant.

I'm sorry I cannot help you make a decision, but I strongly believe that at that age, children need involved parents more than anything. The school is great to teach the kids to work in a social setting and how to listen to teachers and follow instructions. The children of most of the parents who do this much research for pre-Montessori are already ahead in the game. So don't worry too much! But please do keep your ears and eyes open for LKG and UKG admissions and which school you want. At that stage it will start to matter where he goes to school. If Ryan is an option for you right now and you're looking at that school for the long term as well, then perhaps you should consider that school so you don't have to search for a new school for him for KG and First standard. Something to think about.

Best wishes to you and your family in this process.

Tarantino II has left a new comment on your post "Life in Bangalore: Schools III":

I know I'm coming to this blog post very late, but it is an interesting discussion! I am an alum of Mallya Aditi, and just wanted to give my perspective.

Yes there are snobs here, and a lot of kids who come from famous families, but there are also a LOT of hard-working middle-class kids. The school does give scholarships and stuff. Your kids will get a great education and you can avoid the snobs if you want to - I was not from a really rich family and I managed to find good friends there.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Sujatha Bagal said...

Tarantino II, thank you for that comment. I'm sure parents appreciate feedback from someone with genuine insight into the school.

Good luck to you as well.
